Implementation of Janamaithri Suraksha Project in Irinjalakuda

For implementation of the Janamaithri Suraksha project, Irinjalakuda Municipality has been demarcated into 8 Beats. As of 15.08.08. each of the 8006 households comprising the Municipality has been visited at least once by a police officer, barring those that are unoccupied due to absence of house owners. Such houses make up less than 3% of the total number of households.

In response to requests from community members, a Passenger Help Desk has been set up at the Irinjalakuda Railway Station, to assist railway passengers. This Help desk commenced functioning from 01 July 2008, and is operational between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. This service has proved to be especially useful in ensuring that public service vehicles such as autorickshaws and taxis provide a reliable mode of transportation to railway passengers and their families arriving by train at the Irinjalakuda Railway Station during the night hours.

Traffic awareness classes for college students were conducted at Christ College and St Joseph’s College by RSI Muraleedharan from the AR Camp, Thrissur. As part of this programme, an open forum was organised at St Joseph’s College, where representatives of the Bus Owners’ Association, as well as from the Bus Employees’ Federation took part in a discussion on the issues faced by passengers while traveling by bus. This open forum witnessed frank and enthusiastic participation by students and teachers from the College.

From 23.07.08 onwards, a squad of 40 NSS (National Service Scheme) volunteers from Christ College, Irinjalakuda were deployed as ‘Traffic Wardens’ to assist local police officers in regulating traffic at key junctions in Irinjalakuda Municipality. Prior to this, these student volunteers attended workshops in Criminology and Personality development, besides being trained in Traffic Rules & Regulations.

On 19.07.08, the Municipal Chairman of Irinjalakuda Municipality launched the 100% Blood Group Literacy drive at the Lions Club Hall, Irinjalakuda. This project aims to develop a community-wide database of Blood Donors as a community resource to be used by needy persons and organizations, especially during emergency. During the first phase of the campaign, specially trained student volunteers from local colleges were trained to carry out house visits and collect the necessary data. In addition, a well-equipped mobile blood group determination van visited communities across the municipality to assist the data collection drive. As of 15.08.08, the community-wide data collection drive has been completed. Once the data has been collated and processed, it will be made available for community use by commissioning a toll-free number functioning from the Office of the Circle Inspector of Police, Irinjalakuda.
